Necessary Monsters: The Book

The first Necessary Monsters trade paperback is coming out in February from AiT/PlanetLar. The book collects the complete story so far, including updated artwork across all five chapters and a brand new introduction by Kieron Gillen (Phonogram, S.W.O.R.D, Thor). The book is available for pre-order via your local comic shop using Diamond order code DEC09 0641. Alternatively you can purchase via your online retailer of choice – Forbidden Planet in the UK and Amazon in the US seem like good choices.

If you’ve enjoyed reading the series online, myself and Sean would really appreciate you showing that support by ordering a copy of the print edition. Sean needs to eat, and I need to install a new Jacuzzi in my private Helijet. Hell, tell all your friends to order a copy too - Helijet Jazcuzzi’s don’t grow on trees you know.

Monster review from Richard Bruton

Over at the Forbidden Planet blog, Richard reviews Monsters.

He also has an excellent blog which covers the Uk self publishing scene.

Nice one !

New year news…

Well 2008 was a busy year, and it looks like 2009 is going the same way. Seems that NM has been well received so far, and we would like to thank the people that have taken the time to review the online and the printed version, and also for posting comments as well.

NM has also been included in a few ‘best of 2008 ” round ups… which is very welcome.

Over at Fool Brtannia, Regie Rigby , gives Nm The Jester Award for Best Self Published Comic.

‘This fine comic tells stories of spies and horror in brilliantly stark black and white ink drawings. Dialogue is equally stark and the plotting is taut and edgy.’

Cheers Regie!

Over at  CBR, JK Parkin, listed us as one of his favorite web comics for last year.

“It’s a mash-up of horror films, super spies and conspiracy theories, and it’s sick, twisted fun.”

Sounds good to me JK.

Finally a very good friend of the Monster crew, and a talent in his own right Oliver Lambden  handed out the compliments in his end of year round up.

Cheers Oliver.

So, hopefully, we will attempt to update this section with a bit more regularity. but, if we are not here then we are working hard to bring you more Monster goodness. And no, we don’t lose ourselves in epic sessions of  WoW, or juggling pints of Guinness contests.

Low Forbidden Pulse

A flurry of activity this week has seen an appearance at Low Energy Day,  a review  mentioning Necessary Monsters and an interview over at the Pulse. There was also an evening of wine tasting at the  Goodbrey mansion, but that was invite only. Sorry.

From Caption to CBR

The weekend in Oxford was good fun, and the new printing of NM was well received. Some of the excitement can be viewed here, although it seems that myself and Daniel fail to appear together in any picture. Could we be the same person perhaps?

Over at CBR, that powerhouse of comics reporting, Daniel was interviewed about the goings on with NM.

San Diego Bound

Necessary Monsters will shortly be jumping across the pond to attend Comic Con International in San Diego. You’ll be able to find us (meaning Daniel, who for some reason is writing this in the third person plural) at booth number 2001 with the rest of the AiT/PlanetLar crowd. We’ll have copies of the chapter one ashcan for sale as well as preview artwork and script from chapters two and three to take a look at. Daniel will even be on hand to sign things (comics, limbs, etc.) at the times given here.

And speaking of Daniel, you might also like to check out his recent interview at The Comics Reporter in which he reveals some of the secrets behind Necessary Monster’s creation. Illuminating!

No Barcodes

Hey look, comics! Necessary Monsters will now be updating regularly every Monday and Wednesday with a new page of our ongoing spy-horror saga. And to get the ball rolling we’ve gone and uploaded the first four pages of the story to give you all a little extra to chew on.

Still want more? How about a chance to read the whole of chapter one before anyone else on the web? Daniel Merlin Goodbrey and Sean Azzopardi will be on hand this Saturday at the No Barcodes comic festival in Camden Lock and with them will be copies of the exclusive Necessary Monsters mini-comic. Handing them £1.50 of your earth money will be all that is required to secure yourself what someone somewhere will surely one day describe as “a must have collectors item!” Dare you take the risk of not being in London this Saturday to secure yourself a copy? Dare you!? YOU DARE NOT!

The First Cut

Welcome to the still very shaky around the edges website for Necessary Monsters. We’re announcing our presence to the world officially this weekend at the Bristol International Comic Expo, so we figured it’d be kind of a good idea to get our website up at the same time.

Expect to see lots more content start to appear here in the coming weeks, followed by *gasp* an actual weekly comic serial in the not too distant future. Pulp spy horror comic weirdness! Lets go!
